GU80LIB (Special Event) - Guernsey

Liberation Day – Guernsey’s National Celebration

Liberation Day is the national day of Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands and a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom.

It commemorates the liberation of the Channel Islands by British Forces on 9 May 1945, marking the end of nearly five years of occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II (since 30 June 1940).

Observed annually on 9 May, Liberation Day is a joyful and meaningful occasion for the people of Guernsey. The day is filled with vibrant parades, live music, community events, and a strong sense of unity and remembrance. It honours the resilience and spirit of those who endured the hardships of occupation, while celebrating their freedom and the island’s return to peace.
